A bold stand against Moscow's influence: Ukraine's allies unite in defiance.
In a dramatic overnight development, Ukraine's Western allies have come together to challenge a US peace plan that appears to favor Moscow, despite Russia's relentless invasion of its neighbor. President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed that Ukraine will never back down.
A Ukrainian delegation, backed by representatives from France, Germany, and the UK, is set to engage in direct talks with the US in Switzerland on Sunday. The proposed 28-point blueprint, crafted by the US, has raised concerns in Kyiv and European capitals. Zelensky warns that Ukraine may face a difficult choice between upholding its sovereign rights and maintaining the crucial support of the US.
The US plan suggests Ukraine ceding territory to Russia, a move Kyiv has consistently rejected. It also proposes reducing Ukraine's army size and blocking its path to NATO membership, while offering limited security guarantees. This plan largely aligns with Moscow's long-standing demands.
On Saturday, leaders of the European Union, Canada, and Japan issued a joint statement, welcoming US peace efforts but expressing reservations about key aspects of the plan. They emphasized the principle that borders must not be altered by force and expressed concern about proposed limitations on Ukraine's armed forces, which could leave the country vulnerable.
The leaders of France, Germany, and the UK met on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, to discuss their support for Kyiv. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that wars cannot be ended without considering the affected countries' interests and insisted on robust guarantees for Kyiv.
Merz confirmed that envoys from Germany, France, the UK, and the EU will join Ukrainian negotiators in Geneva on Sunday to discuss the US proposal. This meeting was confirmed by Zelensky after President Donald Trump set a deadline for Kyiv's response by next Thursday.
European leaders have consistently warned against rushing a peace deal, recognizing the impact of Ukraine's struggle against Russia on their own future. They insist on being involved in any peace efforts.
Kyiv's key European allies reiterated their doubts about the Kremlin's sincerity in ending the war. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that Russia's actions have never matched its words regarding peace.
European leaders accuse Russia of stalling diplomatic efforts, aiming to overwhelm Ukraine's smaller forces on the battlefield. Kyiv has accepted US ceasefire proposals this year, while Moscow has held out for more favorable terms.
Merz stated that an end to the war requires Ukraine's unconditional consent and that Europe must be part of any peace process. He added that Russia has previously failed to keep its promises regarding Ukraine's territorial integrity.
"From my perspective, there is a chance to end this war," Merz said, "but we are still far from a good outcome for everyone."
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the principle of "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine." French President Emmanuel Macron echoed this sentiment, stating that peace in Ukraine must respect its sovereignty.
As Ukraine commemorates the Soviet-era famine, Zelensky remains defiant. In a video address, he expressed confidence in Ukraine's representatives at the Geneva talks, stating that they know how to protect Ukrainian interests and prevent another Russian invasion. He emphasized that real peace is based on security and justice.
Nine officials, including Zelensky's chief of staff Andrii Yermak and top envoy Rustem Umerov, will participate in the talks, with the negotiators empowered to engage directly with Russia.
On Holodomor Memorial Day, Zelensky reflected on Ukraine's past and present struggles against Russia, stating, "We defended, defend, and will always defend Ukraine. Because only here is our home. And in our home, Russia will definitely not be the master."
The stage is set for a critical diplomatic engagement, with Ukraine's allies standing firm in their support and determination to shape a peaceful resolution that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
