Trump's NFL Legacy: From Rejected Owner to Stadium Namesake? (2025)

Donald Trump's long-standing relationship with the NFL is a story of rejection, ambition, and a surprising twist of fate. From being shut out of the league to potentially having a stadium named after him, his journey is nothing short of fascinating.

When the Detroit Lions players playfully mimicked the 'Trump Dance' after a touchdown, right in front of the former president and a less-than-enthusiastic crowd in Washington, it sparked a mix of amusement and debate. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who led the celebration, explained that he was inspired by Trump's presence, stating that he would have done the same for any president.

Imagine every U.S. president having a signature dance! It's hard to picture, especially before Trump, when image consultants would have shuddered at the thought. But Trump, with his unique style, has made his slow, fist-pumping dance a common sight on NFL fields.

The last time a president attended a regular-season NFL game was in 1978 when Jimmy Carter watched the Dallas Cowboys play the Washington Redskins. Now, history is repeating itself in an unexpected way. Trump considered bringing back the 'Redskins' name for the Washington team, now known as the Commanders.

But here's where it gets controversial... ESPN reported that Trump is subtly hinting to the Commanders' owner that he'd like the new stadium, set to open in 2030 and costing around $3.7 billion, to be named after him. The District of Columbia is contributing $1 billion to the project, which was approved by Joe Biden. While tradition might favor keeping the RFK Stadium name, a White House insider suggests that Trump's wish is likely to be granted.

For decades, Trump found the NFL a tough nut to crack. His attempts to buy the Baltimore Colts in the early '80s were unsuccessful. In 1983, he bought the New Jersey Generals in the USFL, a league designed to compete with the NFL. Trump's true intention was to get into the NFL. He even offered to sacrifice the USFL to get an NFL team, but Commissioner Pete Rozelle refused.

Undeterred, Trump convinced other USFL owners to sue the NFL, technically winning. They were awarded a symbolic $1. John Mara, owner of the New York Giants, then handed Trump a single dollar bill in court.

Trump also looked at the Dallas Cowboys but decided against buying them, famously saying he felt sorry for the buyer. Today, Jerry Jones is worth $21 billion, and the Cowboys are known as 'America's Team,' the wealthiest sports franchise globally.

The NFL, it seemed, was another elite club that wouldn't let Trump in. He's even been inconsistent in his support for local teams, recently switching his allegiance from the Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs, likely favoring the strongest team. If a 'Trump Dome' does come to Washington, it would symbolize an NFL team with a history of losses and a fan base that often disagrees with his politics. However, he doesn't need to attend the games or hear the boos. Having the stadium named after him would be his ultimate victory in the NFL.

Sports broadcaster Stephen A. Smith shared a story about Trump's last attempt to own an NFL team. In 2014, when the Buffalo Bills were for sale, Trump expressed his desire to own the team, even threatening to 'get back' at the NFL owners by running for president if they stood in his way.

What do you think? Will Trump's influence on the NFL continue to grow? Do you think it's appropriate for a stadium to be named after a former president, especially one with such a complex relationship with the league? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
