Tragic Lincolnshire Crash: Mum Spared Jail After Killing Sons Due to Defective Tire (2026)

A mother who caused the deaths of her two young sons in a collision attributed to a defective tyre has avoided prison. Amy Sheppard, the mother of Louie Ellis (eight) and Mason Ellis (six), was behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Astra when her vehicle collided with an Audi on the A52 near Sandilands and Huttoft, Lincolnshire, on 2 October 2023. Louie died at the scene; Mason died in hospital, while their four-year-old brother survived the crash. Two occupants in the Audi were injured as well.

Having already admitted causing death and serious injury by careless driving, Sheppard received a 20-month prison sentence suspended for 20 months and was prohibited from driving for two years. Judge James House KC described the ruling as an act of mercy, noting that while Sheppard’s carelessness led to the deaths of her two sons, there are exceptional cases in which the courts intervene in this way.

The court heard Sheppard, of Mumby Road, Huttoft, had collected her two sons from a primary school in Mablethorpe after finishing her job as a nursery nurse when the crash occurred. Post-incident examinations revealed a rear tyre with a pressure reading of only five psi, though it was possible that tyre pressure dropped during the crash. Prosecutor David Eager said Sheppard had texted her partner the day before, saying, “My tyre is going flat again.” The partner had checked the wrong tyre, which showed 32 psi, and did not inspect the others. A separate driver behind Sheppard noticed the under-inflated tyre and observed the Astra swaying; the vehicle’s rear end reportedly swung and the car turned about 45 degrees, appearing to the Audi driver as if it came from nowhere.

Laurie Ellis, Mason and Louie’s father, who is separated from Sheppard, described Mason as “always cheeky, always smiling.” He said losing Mason felt like losing part of himself and recalled that Louie enjoyed watching football with him. He added that his pain was intensified by Sheppard’s conduct before and after the crash, stating, “Any normal parent would never take that risk. I will never understand it, I will never forgive it.”

Katherine Robinson, representing Sheppard, argued that she suffers from a severe mental health condition resulting from the trauma of the incident and that the condition will stay with her forever.

Judge House acknowledged the case as “an absolute tragedy.”
