Cummings stated, "The district is getting back on track, and yet [the board members] voted and did not take the recommendation of the Commissioner or the board member from St. Louis." He remains optimistic, however, adding, "We just are going to keep our eyes on the prize, keep raising our test scores. We are going to keep doing those things to be fully accredited.”
And this is the part most people miss: Board member Casey cited a rule within the MSIP 6 guidelines that allows the state board to lower a district's status if it fails to meet specific benchmarks set by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The vote was a decisive 6-1, with Pamela Westbrook-Hodges from Pasadena Hills in St. Louis County casting the sole dissenting vote.
Adding another layer to the story, State Commissioner of Education Karla Eslinger spoke in support of the district, advising against using the accreditation drop as a punitive measure for the late audit submission. She highlighted that her department has been working closely with SLPS to stabilize its academic and financial performance. Eslinger also revealed that SLPS officials were not given advance notice of the accreditation discussion during the board meeting. She questioned the practical impact of the demotion, stating, "My position is, lower accreditation. Don’t lower accreditation. The provisional tag on the school district is not going to make that big of a difference as far as what they're doing next...What does it actually do?”
