Their recent event, part of Hegseth's 'Arsenal of Freedom' tour, took place at SpaceX headquarters in Starbase, Texas – a location whose name alone pays homage to Star Trek terminology.
But here's where it gets controversial... Neither Musk nor Hegseth appeared to recognize the potentially cautionary nature of their chosen phrase. The 'Arsenal of Freedom' isn't just a catchy slogan; it's also the title of a chilling 1988 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. This episode features a dangerous AI-powered weapons system and its relentless automated salesman, ultimately leading to the destruction of a civilization and threatening the crew of the USS Enterprise. This subtle connection highlights a critical oversight.
During the event, Musk unveiled his ambitious plans for SpaceX, including his desire to 'make Starfleet Academy real.' (For those unfamiliar, Starfleet Academy is the fictional training ground central to the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy TV series, scheduled to debut on January 15.)
When introducing Hegseth, the two men sealed their shared vision with a handshake, followed by Hegseth's Vulcan salute and the resounding declaration, 'Star Trek real!'
Hegseth then emphasized the significance of innovation and artificial intelligence for the U.S. military.
'Very soon, we will have the world’s leading AI models on every unclassified and classified network throughout our department. Long overdue,' Hegseth stated.
'To further that, today at my direction, we’re executing an AI acceleration strategy that will extend our lead in military AI established during President Trump’s first term. This strategy will unleash experimentation, eliminate bureaucratic barriers, focus on investments and demonstrate the execution approach needed to ensure we lead in military AI and that it grows more dominant into the future.'
