Get ready for a game-changer in the Australian automotive scene! The fully electric ute revolution is here, and it's more affordable than you think!
South Korea's KGM, formerly known as Ssangyong, has just unveiled its first electric ute, the Musso EV, with a starting price that's a pleasant surprise. Starting at around $60,000 before on-road costs, this ute is an enticing option for those seeking a blend of practicality and eco-friendliness.
But here's where it gets controversial... KGM received the green light for this electric ute just two months ago, and now it's already making waves. With two variants, 2WD and AWD, the Musso EV offers a range of features and pricing options to suit different needs.
The line-up includes:
- Musso EV: Starting at $60,000
- Musso EV Black Edge: $62,000
- Musso EV AWD: $64,000
Joseph Lee, KGM Australia's Managing Director, describes the Musso EV as a lifestyle-oriented vehicle, perfect for those seeking versatility and efficiency. He emphasizes its ability to embrace outdoor adventures while pushing the boundaries of innovation.
And this is the part most people miss... The Musso EV's pricing puts it in direct competition with the BYD Shark 6 PHEV ute, which starts at $57,900. However, the Musso has an edge being fully electric. It's also one of the lighter electric utes on the market, with a tare weight ranging from 2165 to 2285 kg.
Under the hood (or rather, under the bonnet), the Musso EV boasts a powerful 152 kW motor for the RWD version, with the AWD variant offering even more punch. Both variants are powered by an 80.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering an impressive range of up to 420 km for the RWD and 380 km for the AWD.
Fast charging is a breeze with the Musso EV, capable of reaching 80% in just 31 minutes with a 120 kW charger. This means you can quickly top up your battery and get back on the road in no time.
When it comes to towing, the Musso EV offers a respectable 1,800 kg capacity, and it rides high with a ground clearance of 181.4 cm, making it a capable and versatile ute.
KGM, an acronym for KG Mobility, has been making waves in Australia with its recent vehicle launches, previously badged as Ssangyong. EVs are gaining traction Down Under, but the ute market has been slower to adopt electric models. We had anticipated a higher starting price, closer to $70,000, based on European pricing.
The Musso EV comes with an impressive warranty package, offering 7 years or unlimited kilometres for the vehicle and a class-leading 10-year unlimited kilometre warranty for the battery pack. This shows KGM's confidence in their electric ute.
You can expect to see the Musso EV at selected KGM dealers in November, with official sales kicking off on 1 December 2025. The launch models include the highly specified 2WD and AWD variants, with the unique 2WD Black Edge edition also available.
