While the trailer kept John's face mostly under wraps, focusing on the thrilling third-person gameplay and the signature 'gun-fu' combat, fans were thrilled to see Keanu Reeves' likeness brought to life. And here's the kicker: it's been confirmed that Keanu will not only lend his voice to the character but is also actively involved in the game's production, alongside franchise director Chad Stahelski. Pretty cool, right?
Now, for those who love diving deep into lore, this game is set years before the events of the 'Impossible Task' and promises a blend of familiar faces and exciting new characters. It's being crafted by Saber Interactive, the studio behind the popular World War Z game and the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remaster, so we can expect some serious quality.
Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive, expressed his honor in collaborating with Keanu, Chad, and Lionsgate to bring the world of John Wick to life in a AAA game. Lionsgate's Jenefer Brown is equally enthusiastic, inviting fans to 'step into the shoes of John Wick' and explore the intricate world of The High Table. They're aiming to capture the unparalleled action, brand-defining fight choreography, immersive world-building, and authenticity that we all love about the films.
This isn't the franchise's first foray into gaming, of course. We've seen crossovers with titles like Payday 2, Fortnite, and Call of Duty, not to mention a VR game and a tactical RPG. But this new project sounds like a much more substantial and integrated experience.
But here's where it gets interesting: While John Wick 5 is indeed confirmed, this game is a separate venture. And speaking of other ventures, there's also a film in the works focusing on the character Caine, with Donnie Yen set to direct and star. Keanu Reeves won't be appearing in that one. It's a bit like how the original script for the Ballerina movie didn't include him, but he ended up making an appearance in the final cut. The universe is clearly expanding in many directions!
