The Tampa Bay Rays have unveiled the first interior renderings of their proposed ballpark, a long-awaited project that promises to revolutionize the fan experience. This new stadium, designed by Populous, a renowned sports venue firm, aims to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere while incorporating modern amenities and design innovations. The renderings showcase a dynamic space that prioritizes playability and the natural outdoor experience, offering a clear view of the sky and the surrounding development.
One of the most notable features is the successor to the popular ray tank, a larger and deeper aquarium that will serve as the new home for the rays. The primary plaza entrance, located in center field, will feature a grand gateway area with an impressive aquarium display. This design element not only adds visual appeal but also enhances the connection between fans and the game.
The seating bowl is designed to bring fans close to the field, with a fixed roof providing shade and a clear view of the sky. Dynamic lighting systems will enhance the atmosphere during night games, and the ballpark's capacity of approximately 30,000 fixed seats can expand for special events, ensuring flexibility for concerts, conventions, and other large gatherings. The two video scoreboards in left and right field will be among the largest and most technologically advanced in Major League Baseball.
However, the Rays have not yet reached a funding agreement with the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County, which is a crucial step in the construction process. The team's use agreement at Tropicana Field expires after the 2028 season, and they have set Opening Day in 2029 as their target to move into their new, long-term home. The ballpark will be part of a mixed-use development on the current site of Hillsborough College's campus, across Dale Mabry Highway from Raymond James Stadium.
The design elements of the ballpark will continue to evolve as the Rays work with elected officials and city and county staff to reach a final funding agreement. This project has been a long-standing pursuit for the Rays, who have been seeking a new home for two decades. With the release of these renderings, fans can finally envision the future of their beloved team's new ballpark, a space that promises to create lasting memories and a deeper connection between fans and the game.
