As of March 1, 2026, any app found to be excessively using 'wake locks' will face consequences on the Play Store. Wake locks, you ask? They're like the backstage pass to keep your phone awake, even when the screen is off. While they have their uses, some apps abuse this power, leading to rapid battery drain.
And this is the part most people miss: these apps will now carry a warning label on the Play Store, and may even lose their spot in recommended lists. Google's new policy aims to identify and call out these battery-draining culprits.
The company has already been tracking app crashes and unresponsive behavior, but now, battery efficiency is a top priority. Google wants developers to create smarter, more energy-efficient apps, and give users the transparency they deserve.
An app will be flagged for excessive battery drain if it keeps your phone awake for over two hours in a day without a valid reason. On wearables, Google has set a threshold of 4.44% battery drain per hour during active use.
