Global Agri-Foods Revolution: How China is Embracing Premium Produce (2025)

China's food scene is undergoing a revolution, and the China International Import Expo (CIIE) is at the heart of it. But what's all the fuss about?

A blueberry like no other

Imagine a blueberry that's as big as a bottle cap and tastes sweeter and crisper than any you've ever tried. This unique variety, grown in the deserts of Peru, stole the show at the recent CIIE. Imported by Joy Wing Mau Chile Spa, these blueberries embarked on a remarkable journey, traveling 17,000 km from Chancay Port in Peru to Shanghai Port in just 23 days. This was made possible by the direct shipping route, a Belt and Road project connecting China and Peru, which has significantly reduced travel time and opened doors for specialty produce.

But here's where it gets controversial—the Belt and Road Initiative has faced criticism for its potential environmental and social impacts. Yet, for Joy Wing Mau, it's a game-changer, allowing them to collaborate with local orchards in over 20 countries and bring exotic fruits to Chinese consumers.

A durian's journey from tree to table

The CIIE also showcased the remarkable speed at which fresh produce can reach Chinese markets. Take the Malaysian Musang King durian, for instance. These durians, harvested at peak ripeness, are sorted and packaged within hours before flying to China, ensuring they arrive fresh the very next morning. This efficiency has led to a tenfold increase in sales over six months, a testament to the growing demand for exotic fruits.

A global fruit feast for Chinese consumers

Joy Wing Mau's success is just the tip of the iceberg. With over 30 cold chain logistics centers across China, they distribute a staggering 3,000 tonnes of high-quality fruit daily to 20 million households. And it's not just durians and blueberries; Southeast Asian fruits like dragon fruit and jackfruit are also gaining popularity, thanks to streamlined customs procedures and reduced logistics costs under the China-ASEAN trade cooperation framework.

Russian delicacies and Brazilian beef

The CIIE's impact extends beyond fruits. A Russian food producer signed a cooperation deal with a Chinese company to tailor their products to Chinese tastes, with initial shipments selling out even before dispatch. This has led to increased production and the establishment of a sales headquarters in China, making their products more accessible and affordable.

Meanwhile, Brazilian beef is making its mark on Chinese palates. With improved living standards and purchasing power, Chinese consumers are embracing this high-quality protein. Restaurants like Latina Brazilian Steakhouse are thriving, with a significant shift in clientele, indicating a growing appetite for imported meats.

A growing appetite for imported foods

The trends are clear—China's demand for imported foods is on the rise. Agricultural imports from ASEAN countries have increased by 15.3% year on year, and Latin American beef imports are set to continue climbing. The CIIE serves as a catalyst, providing a platform for global producers to access the massive Chinese market and cater to the evolving tastes of Chinese consumers.

So, is the CIIE revolutionizing China's food landscape? The numbers speak for themselves. But what do you think? Are these developments a positive step towards a more diverse and exciting culinary scene, or do they raise concerns about sustainability and local food cultures?
