Ever wondered what it's like to be loved by a tech titan? Talulah Riley, Elon Musk's ex-wife, offered a glimpse into their relationship, revealing a side of the Tesla CEO that many don't see. In a 2022 BBC series, The Elon Musk Show, Riley shared a heartwarming, albeit unconventional, Christmas Eve story. It highlights the lengths Musk would go to express his affection, even amidst the chaos of running multiple companies.
Musk, juggling Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity, was feeling the pressure. Riley recounted a Christmas Eve in Boulder, Colorado, when Musk realized he'd forgotten her gift. He confessed, "It’s not that I don’t love you—I do really, really love you. It’s just that my brain is exploding."
But here's where it gets controversial... In the middle of the night, Musk, clad only in a T-shirt and shorts, vanished into the snowy landscape without slippers. Hours later, he returned with a bouquet of hand-picked flowers, dug from the frozen ground. Presenting the flowers, he simply said, "I just wanted to show you how much I loved you."
Riley emphasized the immense stress Musk was under. SpaceX was battling failures, Tesla was racing to deliver the Model S with a substantial government loan, and SolarCity was struggling. She admitted to being worried about his health, stating, "He was under incredible stress. I was worried he was going to have a heart attack. I just kept thinking, God, I’ve got to keep this guy alive.”
This midnight gesture became a symbol of Musk's emotional intensity. Riley has often defended him against perceptions of being cold or detached, stating, “He is the most emotional person I know. He feels very, very deeply.”
A different perspective... Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has also offered insights into Musk's character. Huang, in a podcast with Joe Rogan, recounted how Musk was the sole early buyer of the DGX-1 AI supercomputer in 2016. Huang personally delivered the machine to Musk, only to discover it was for OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. Huang said, “When I announced this thing, nobody in the world wanted it... Nobody wanted to be part of it, except for Elon.”
Musk's actions, from the late-night flower hunt to his early support of AI technology, paint a picture of a complex individual. What do you think of Musk's actions? Do you see them as romantic, or do they reflect a different set of priorities? Share your thoughts in the comments!
