Chris King Unveils 36T RingDrive Hub Upgrade: Faster Rolling, Less Drag, World Cup Proven! (2026)

Bold move: Chris King Precision Components expands its hub tuning lineup with Goldstone-approved internals to shave milliseconds off World Cup DH runs.

Chris King has long supported the Santa Cruz Syndicate, and while the average rider may not obsess over hub spec, these updates target meaningful marginal gains through carefully chosen internals—proven by the changes now shipping in the time-tested King hubs.

Traditionally, King hubs used a 72-tooth RingDrive. The company is now offering a coarser 36-tooth option, designed to reduce drag and allow the hub to roll more freely. I spoke with Chris King’s president, Kirby Bedsaul, last summer, and he hinted at ongoing refinements aimed at squeezing a bit more rolling speed from the wheel package.

The Syndicate crew has faith in this approach and in the data backing it. At the elite level, even tiny gains matter, and they view these tweaks as a real contribution toward that goal. The energized buzz about the new Buzzworks 36T RingDrive signals a shift toward more customizable engagement. While changing the engagement deadband from 5° to 10° won’t be ideal for every rider or terrain, the move demonstrates King’s willingness to open tuning doors for those who want to experiment. King hubs have earned a cult following thanks to their renowned durability and straightforward service.

The RingDrive 36T is backward compatible with all prior ISO, Classic, and Boost Chris King hubs dating back to the 1990s. RingDrive kits are priced at $150 USD and available directly from Chris King or through authorized dealers.

Beyond the new internals, Chris King is also introducing 6-bolt hubs in their SuperBoost spacing. This aligns their full Mountain Hub lineup with the prevailing standard, alongside their Centerlock offerings. King previously pared back 6-bolt hubs but has gradually reintroduced them to meet demand. SuperBoost 6-bolt rear hubs start at $590 USD.
