The dental practice, Lodge Causeway Dental Centre, has since apologized for any confusion, stating that the appointments were merely "offered" alongside check-ups. They claim to have seen 2,591 NHS patients since their open day in September and have only offered 108 hygienist appointments.

"We were told we had to pay £70 for a hygienist appointment to register as an NHS patient," she said. "I felt bad for those who couldn't afford it, especially when some weren't even aware of the cost beforehand."

Sam Mellor, who also paid the fee, described the situation as an "ultimatum." He said, "I asked the receptionist, and she confirmed it. I had to book the hygienist appointment to be registered as an NHS patient."

When the BBC brought this to the attention of the British Dental Association (BDA), its chair, Eddie Crouch, expressed alarm. "If patients are being told they must have a private hygienist appointment before NHS treatment, that's not right."

Lodge Causeway Dental Centre maintains that the appointments were an "offer," but the BDA and affected patients disagree. The practice has apologized and encouraged patients to discuss their concerns.

The NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB) clarified that while dentists can offer a hygienist appointment, patients should not be obliged to pay at the time of registration.
